Alvin Bradford Stephens, Sr., passed away November 2, 2000, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Born September 23, 1924, in Monroeville, AL, to Charles and Harriet Stephens. He was the sixth child in a family of nine children. He fondly remembered walking behind a mule plow and only wearing shoes on Sunday. He was drafted into the Navy during WWII and later joined the Air Force Reserves during the Korean War. His military service helped to pay for his college education. He graduated from Tuskeegee Institute in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical industry electricity. He immediately knew that was not his calling in life, therefore he took a teaching position in Greenville, AL. At the first teachers' meeting that year, he spotted Juanita Coleman, another new teacher, across the room and made a point to introduce himself after the meeting. Four months later, Juanita became his wife of fifty years. Their union produced three children and six grandchildren. He received a Vocational Education certificate from Tennessee State University, a master of education and education specialist degrees in administration and supervision from the University of Toledo. Within the Toledo Public Schools system he served as an elementary teacher and principal at Robinson Jr. High, Roosevelt, Washington, Chase and Keyser Elementarys. He participated in the Reading Study Committee, member of C.A.R.E.S., implemented the "Home Study Hour" in which parents contracted to spend a minimum of one hour everyday to turn off the television and focus on their children.
