He started an insurance business and was also a bookkeeper for the La Harpe Bank. Always active in the Democratic party, he served La Harpe as a city clerk and was so efficient that he was made deputy circuit clerk and after holding that office for six years, was elected county clerk in 1914 and re-elected to that position until his retirement.
He was a member of LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195, A.F.& A.M and the Christian Church, La Harpe
He served as secretary for the Hancock County School Board.
