Moses Cornelius
Birth: Nov. 20, 1784
Greenville County
South Carolina, USA
Death: 1846
Blount County
Alabama, USA

Moses is my great-great-great grandfather.

The tombstone for Moses indicates 1781-1846. The birth date is incorrect. The correct date is 20 Nov, 1784. He died some time after 25 Nov 1846, the date of his will.

Moses was the fourth child and second son born to William and Lettice Cornelius. He married Cynthia Bynum September 13, 1808 in South Carolina. They were the parents of 13 documented children: Zechariah, Joel, Sarah, Eliza, Champion, William, Meredith, Elizabeth M., Andrew, Cargile, Dicie, Celia, and Tillman B..

After leaving South Carolina, Moses spent time in Tennesse where his first eight children were born. He moved to Blount County, Alabama about 1819. His last five children were born in Alabama.

He was among the first settlers in Blount County, Alabama where he operated a grist mill. Moses operated his mill from 1819 until about 1844, when he sold it to Asa Bynum. About two years before his death, he had a coffin made for himself. He kept it under his bed. Just before he died, he called for his neighbors to come and see how a Christian man could die. Moses was the first person buried in the Old Liberty Cemetery. [Source: Robin Sterling]
