James Henry Horton was born in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, the son of James Horton and Alice Munro. He migrated to Baltimore, Maryland, and later served in the War of 1812. He married on December 15, 1808, to Elizabeth Diffenderffer. They were the parents of 6 children (5 daughters and one son). He died in 1837, and his widow lived another 44 years.
