David and his brother James would enlist in the Civil War together on 18 Sep 1862 in Blount County, Tn as Privates in the Union Army, Company B, 3rd East Tennessee Calvary Regiment. Their terms of enlistment was for a period of 3-years.
David was captured on 24 Sep 1864 in Athens, Alabama. He was taken to Cahaba, aka/Castle Morgan, a confederate prison camp in Cahaba, Alabama where he was held captive until his parole on 21 Apr 1865. From Cahaba, he was transported to Vicksburg, Mississippi and placed aboard the Sultana which departed on 26 Apr 1865. The following day, around 2:00 am, on 27 Apr 1865, approx 8-miles north of Memphis, an estimated 1,600 of Sultana's 2,400 passengers were killed when three of the ship's four boilers exploded and the Sultana sank. Unfortunately, this disaster was overshadowed in the press by other recent events. John Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin, was killed just the day before.
David was one of about 500 survivors, many with horrible burns, who were transported to hospitals in Memphis. Up to 300 of them died later from burns or exposure. Newspaper accounts indicate that the people of Memphis had sympathy for the victims despite the fact that they had recently been enemies. The Chicago Opera Troupe staged a benefit, the crew of the Essex raised $1,000 and the mayor took in three survivors. On 04 Mar 1931 the last survivor, Pleasant M. Keeble, died at the age of 85. Historically, the Sultana disaster has been referred to as the Titanic of the Mississippi.
David was mustered out of service on 10 Jun 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee. He would make the arduous journey back home to his native Blount County. On 06 Jul 1882 he filed for his Civil War invalid pension. His wife, Milly would die within 2-years.
After the death of Milly in 1884, David would remarry to Aurelia Elizabeth "Rilla" (Carroll) Latham on 22 Oct 1885 in Blount County. Performed by: J.G. Norton, Justice of the Peace. She brought to this union two children, William Anderson Carroll and Newton Edward Carroll, sons of George Washington "Joe" Latham.
Six children would be born to this union:
