Chief Cameron was the son of Kate Harrington and Thomas Cameron. He was a member of the Carthage Police Department and had served with the agency for only 4 months. Cameron was shot in the face with a shotgun and killed instantly. He was ambushed when he and another officer went to investigate a reported disturbance on a darkened street. Eight suspects fled the scene. Six were arrested within a few days in Carthage. The other two were arrested in Sabine, West Virgina a month later. He was survived by his wife and child.
