Major League Baseball Player. Played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Worcester Ruby Legs, Detroit Wolverines and Providence Greys from 1875 to 1885. He began his career as a pitcher in 1875-1876, and threw the first pitch in the first game in National League history on April 22, 1876. He later returned to the major leagues from 1880-1885 as a right fielder. From 1883 to 1884 he was the player-manager for the Philadelphia Athletics. He then served as an umpire in the American Association in 1887, the National League in 1889, and the Players' League in 1890.
