DR. HAROLD DAVID LANKFORD
Dr. Harold Lankford, a long-time family physician in the Mexico, Missouri area, died Monday, August 24, 2009. Dr. Lankford passed away in his sleep at Pin Oaks Nursing Home after having recently suffered a severe stroke. He was 85 years old.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 28, at St. Brendan's Catholic Church, Mexico, with Monsignor Greg Higley officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, at Arnold Funeral Home. The rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Brendan Cemetery.
Dr. Lankford loved the people of Mexico and the surrounding area and considered them as family. His love and commitment to his family has been unwavering. He always had a warm and welcoming smile and found his greatest fulfillment in helping others. He was a humble man who gave credit to God for everything.
Dr. Lankford was born in Moberly, Missouri in 1924 to John and Stella Lankford. He was the youngest of four children. His family moved to St. Louis in 1935 where he attended St. Anthony's Grade School and graduated from St. Mary's High School on the city's southside.
He spent on year at St. Louis University studying chemistry before entering naval officer's training in 1943 at Westminster College in Fulton. While there, the head of the physiology department strongly encouraged him to go into medicine. He studied under the accelerated wartime program and graduated from St. Louis University Medical School in 1948. After time at Great Lakes Naval Station near Chicago, Illinois, he was assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. A need for physicians in the newly created Air Force led to Dr. Lankford being selectively commissioned into the Air Force as Lt.s.g. at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi in conjunction with being released from the Navy as Captain. He also served at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas in the early part of the Korean Conflict.
In 1947, Harold married Marion Miller from his St. Louis neighborhood. After his military service ended in 1951, they moved with their three young children to Mexico, where they would have five more children and he would spend the rest of his life.
Dr. Lankford's general medicine family practice spanned 33 years. In his earlier years of his practice, he delivered over 1300 babies and the first set of triplets at Audrain Medical Center (AMC). Dr. Lankford served on the AMC Hospital Board from 1974 to 1986(two terms as Chairman). He also served as Chief of Staff at the hospital for two terms. His practice also included Industrial Medicine for the Mexico/Kaiser Refractories, Missouri Military Academy physician, and Mexico High School Football physician. After retiring from family practice in 1985 he became Director for the Breast Cancer Detection Project of the National Cancer Institute at Ellis Fischel Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He also served as Chief of Staff and retired from Ellis Fischel in 1992.
As a member of St. Brendan's Church, he served four years on the Parish Council, one year as president, one term on the Parish School Board, and was the Parish Coordinator for Pro-Life. He also served on the Diocesan Pastoral Council. the Deanery, and the Diocesan Pro-Life Committee for the diocese of Jefferson City. He served as a doctor for the Free Clinic at Public Health and initiated the Women in Crisis Pregnancy Center (a Birthright Clinic). He served on the Board of Habitat for Humanity in Mexico. Dr. Lankford was a member of the American Medical Association, Missouri State Medical Association, Academy of Family Practice (Education Board Member), a past President and long-time member of Mexico Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus of Mexico, Life Member of the American Cancer Society, Board Member of the Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Project for the State of Missouri, Mexico Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, and former National Chamber of Commerce Director, and a Vitae Caring Foundation program sponsor.
Harold is survived by Marion: his wife, first love, best friend, and greatest advocate. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in June. In addition, he is survived by their eight children, Jean Fahlstrom and husband Jerry of Raytown, David Lankford and wife Joyce of Jefferson City, Carol Lankford of Mexico, Mike Lankford and wife Kay of Shereville, Indiana, Tim Lankford and wife Sally of Kenilworth, Illinois, Ann Lankford of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Tom Lankford and wife Erin of Liberty, and Joan Lankford of Independence; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Alice Rudy, of Littleton, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack, and sister Kathleen.
