When the Civil War began, he was an aide for Connecticut Governor W. A. Buckingham and took President Lincoln's call to oraginize troops. In November 1861, he was appointed a Colonel in the 13th Connecticut infantry and joined General Butler's Army in Louisiana. Placed in command of the Brigade in 1862, he headed the movement in the La Fourche district. In April 1863, he commanded the first Red River campaign and received the Confederate surrender after the siege of Port Hudson in July. He was promoted Brigadier General and after the engagements of Sabine Cross-Roads, Pleasant Hill, he take command of the garrison at Baton Rouge. In July 1864, he joined General Sheridan in the Shenandoah engagements and was in command of the defenses at Savannah, Georgia. For his service and dedication to duty, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March 1865. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
