| Birth: | Aug. 2, 1911 | | Death: | Nov. 15, 2005 |  United States Navy Rear Admiral. A 1932 Naval Academy graduate, during World War II he received the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism". On October 25, 1944, as commanding officer of the USS Melvin during the Battle of Surigao Strait in the Philippines, he sank the Japanese Battleship Fuso. Military historians believe the sinking of the Japanese Fuso was the only instance in the war of a destroyer sinking a battleship. In addition to tours of duty served in WW II, he served in the Korean War, on the United Nations Military Staff Committee and Chief of Staff to the Superintendent of the Naval Academy. He retired on November 1, 1959 and is also a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, with service ribbons and commendations. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
