Edmond R. Amateis artist. Edmond was a sculptor and educator and has various works of art on display across the United States and in Europe. He was the son of another highly regarded artist, Louis Amateis. At the age of 13 Edmond placed third in a drawing contest sponsored by the Washington Post newspaper. When he was 14 he took first prize for his entry in the same series. He would later continue his training and education at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York City. Edmond also served in the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1921 he won a three year fellowship with the American Academy in Rome, Italy. From 1942 to 1944 he served as president of the National Sculpture Society. In his later years he lived in Florida where he breed various strains of rhododendrons, some of which bear his name to this day.
