In Calvert county, Md. there are some names that are well known such as Louie Goldstein; some that are seldom mentioned such as R. B. Taney; some that get little press such as Rev. Stephen Balch (from the American Revolution) and some that get much more (from the later War of 1812). But most everyone agrees one of the really best known seems to have been one Vera Freeman and her White Sands 'wonderland'/restaurant/marina/bar complex that she developed over time in the 1950s. A little slice of glitz of Vegas and some the Hollywood scene in what is still a rural part of southern Calvert county, Md. In her obituary story, the Washington Post talked of her love of a good martini and the zest she had for living a rich life. She liked lots of people. She is missed by many today. She shared her dreams within the complex in 'Southern Maryland' area she left behind but one that lives on today...
