In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison, himself a Union veteran who fought in Georgia, signed the bill establishing the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Park, Catoosa Springs, Georgia. Thus in 1899, the State of Georgia, erected the 87 foot high Confederate Soldiers of Georgia Monument to the memory of those lost in the Battle of Chickamauga, September 18 to 20, 1863. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)

In memory of Pvt. William Torrance and his brother, Pvt. James Torrance. James was killed while fighting beside his brother. The men of Company "K" voted to have him recognized for his heroic action in the Battle of Chickamauga
