Sam Jr. was an AKC salt & pepper "mini" (miniature schnauzer), but leaned towards being very dark. He had a cropped tail, intact floppy ears and very short legs. Sam was very alert and friendly to everyone. He would "talk" to us with loud, sharp "whoo whoo"s. He was a real charmer and loved to travel. I even nicknamed him "Mr. Personality". He was such a good boy.
I purchased Sam for my Dad in 2000 from a nice lady in Baxley that decided to get out of the kennel business. The whole drive up to North Carolina, Sammy clung to me with such affection. We bonded instantly. I was taking him north to live with my father. Dad was recovering from his 2nd open heart surgery at the time. He said Sammy helped him feel like living again. When Dad died in 2006, I inherited Sam.
I've had some ask, "How did Sam get to be called 'Jr.'?" Well, many years ago my Dad & my step-mother had another mini named "Sam" and they missed him very much. So, when I gave this one for them, they just kept the name.
In the years following that Sam lived with my parents, he and Dad where inseperable. He brought much joy and companionship to Dad. After my step-mother died in 2004, Dad had to go through kidney dialysis three times a week. Our loyal little Sam was always there to greet him on his return and this helped Dad feel needed.
Sadly, the poor little guy suffered from some form of inherited epilepsy. He had to take medication for these seizures. I wish there was a cure but at least there is medication to control it. Poor guy also freaked out when it rains. Thunder and lightning didn't frighten him, just rain.
Sam developed congestive heart failure from poor teeth care. Then after a short stint in the kennel, we noticed he had irreversable renal failure. It wasn't their fault, of course, it had been developing for years. We had to have Sam "put down" because he was in so much misery. He died abt. 9:11 on a lovely Friday morn. I miss the little guy. I don't have my little buddy to ride around on the golf cart anymore or greet us when we come home. He definately left some permanent paw prints on my heart.
He now rests with his favorite toys next to our other dogs under the oak trees beside the cemetery. Rest in peace little buddy.
A great big *^*Thank You*^* to all who leave a virtual flower for Sam Jr. He was a friendly, fun, personable little guy.
