David Howells was born in Parsons, PA son of Lewis Howells and Mary Ann (Jones) Howells. He served in the Spanish American War Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and attained the rank of corporal though private is listed on his gravestone. He was a foreman for the Lehigh coal company in Wilkes-Barre and was elected to and served a term of office on the Wilkes-Barre City Council. His first wife was Ruth Howells with children Anna Howells Howe and David Howells, Jr. who are both buried at the same location. His second wife was Gertrude Fehlinger with children Margaret Howells Hines (1915-2002) and son William Howells who died as an infant in 1916 and is buried at the same location. Mr. Howells resided at 52 W. Linden Street in Wilkes-Barre. He died in June 1923 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following an operation due to a pancreatitis attack suffered at home.
David Howells' government issue Spanish-American war veteran marker was replaced in 2003 due to weathering and wear of the original marker. It is adjacent to the large "Howells" gravestone.
