He was the son of Earle Jacob Richey and Mary Wintress Oakleaf. On October 30, 1944 he married Mary Jane Carter in Seminole County, Florida; they had three sons and one daughter.

Lt. Leland Richey (name misspelled in the official record), the pilot of a VF-152, was listed as missing following a strike south of Wonsan. His plane was believed to have been hit by enemy air strike. His status was changed to killed in action on August 19,1954. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

There is another cenotaph for LT Richey in Fort Scott National Cemetery, Kansas.
