Dr. Bicknell was born in Cason, Texas, on April 18, 1926. He moved to Shreveport with his family at an early age. He attended Shreveport schools and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Centenary College. He attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine where he received a medical degree in 1951. He entered into private practice as a general surgeon at Willis-Knighton Hospital, just blocks from his childhood home. In 1963, he was named to the hospital's Board of Trustees.

In 1986 Dr. Bicknell was appointed Medical Director of Willis-Knighton where he participated in the health system's unprecedented growth. He was responsible for the construction of the Diagnostic and Surgical Building on the hospital's main campus and the construction of Virginia Hall Nursing Home, now WK Progressive Care Center. In addition, he helped develop Willis-Knighton's Home Health and Hospice programs and was a driving force in the establishment of the joint programs between Willis-Knighton and LSU Medical Center, now LSU Health Sciences Center. He was particularly proud of the Regional Transplant Program which was an outgrowth of those cooperative efforts.

Dr. Bicknell was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Shreveport Medical Society, which he served as President; the Louisiana State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He was also a member of First Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Directors and the Pastor Search Committee. Among his other affiliations were the Shreveport Country Club, the Shreveport Club and the Cotillion Club.

In December 1999, Dr. Bicknell was honored by his fellow physicians with the Shreveport Medical Society's 1999 Distinguished Service Award. In March 2000, Willis-Knighton Health System honored him by renaming Virginia Avenue on the hospital's main campus "Albert L. Bicknell Drive."
