Born in Lichtenberg, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, August Johann Wilhelm Dörnbrak was the son of Sophia Spietz and John Dörnbrak. Immigrating to the U.S. with his parents and brothers in late 1884, they settled in Orrville, Ohio and he changed his name to August Henry Denbrock. August married Ida Cheyney on August 29, 1901 and their union produced four healthy children. He was a member of the Masons, the Knights of Pythias and Sigma Nu fraternity.
August's illustrious teaching career began in a one room school house in McQuaid, Ohio and included principalships at West Lebanon and Navarre. From 1916 to 1921, he was the superintendent of schools in Barnesville, Ohio and while there helped organize the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Professor Denbrock moved to Garfield Heights in 1921 to join the mathematics department at South High School. For many years while at South, he served the pupils as vocational guidance director, student council advisor and member of the National Honor Society committee.
August was honored at a dinner given by the men of the South High faculty when he retired in June 1941, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The following year he returned to active teaching at East Technical High School and in 1943 finally retired permanently at age 69. With over 40 years of esteemed service behind him, August relaxed to cultivate his vegetable garden until his death in 1947.
