John Joseph Tierney was born in New York City and was the son of Michael Tierney and Anne McDonald.

(Note: earlier records, including church baptism have his middle name as Michael.)

Michael and Anne emigrated from Ireland around 1880 (separately I think) and married in 1888. He was a Hostler (Stableman) until he joined became a NYC Policeman in 1886. Michael retired and died several months later in 1913.

John had two older sisters: Margaret and Annie and two younger brothers, Michael Edward and Thomas Francis.

John married Sabina Gilroy and had 4 children: Annie, John Jr., Winifred and Sabina. Both Winifred and mother Sabina died in the 1918 Spanish Influenza epidemic. (Sabina is buried in this plot and Winifred is buried with her grandparents and uncle in Second Calvary.)

John married Mary Egan in 1919. They had a set of stillborn twins and then my father Michael in 1927.
