YORKTOWN - Roger A. Breckenridge was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma on November 9, 1938. He graduated from the Cyril, Oklahoma High School as valedictorian. He entered the University of Oklahoma in the fall of 1957. He graduated with a B.S. in Physics (With Distinction). He entered the College of William and Mary as a physics graduate student in September 1963 and graduated with a M.A. (Physics) in August 1967. Later he was accepted to the doctorate program and graduated with a PhD. (Physics) in August 1974.Roger A. Breckenridge began his career with NASA on February 2, 1962. He served as a physicist studying radiation damage in semiconductor materials and devices. He was promoted to section head of a group studying the properties of semiconductor materials and devices in November 1969. He became the assistant branch head of an organization investigating electronic materials, devices and subsystems in May 1974 and expanded the branch efforts to include sensor systems. In November 1980 he was promoted to branch head. He served in a program regarding the Senior Executive Services at NASA Headquarters from September 1982 to September 1983. Dr. Breckenridge headed an office in the newly-formed Space Station Office in May 1984. Subsequently, he became the assistant head of this office in December 1990. Later, he became the assistant chief of the Systems Analysis Division analyzing both space vehicles and systems. This division became the Space Systems Division in May 1994. He then was the assistant head and acting head of the Systems Analysis Directorate analyzing aeronautical and space vehicles, systems and sensor systems. Dr Breckenridge retired from NASA on January 3, 2003. He then worked for SAIC as a technical analyst from March 2003 until May 2009. His work spanned an array of topics dealing with the space vehicles, systems, subsystems and processes. Since his retirement from SAIC, Dr. Breckenridge served as a tutor to high school and college students in mathematics, chemistry and physics.Dr Breckenridge's hobbies include vocal music, especially choral music. He was an experienced singer having performed with various church choirs and singing groups. Most recently, he sang with the Yorktown Chorale. He also performed as a soloist for these groups.Dr. Breckenridge is survived by his wife Charlotte, his daughters, Janet L Breckenridge, Britt Chase Donaldson and 2 granddaughters, Emma and Lucy McNulty. A funeral service was held Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 2:00pm in Grafton Christian Church, 109 Brick Church Road, Yorktown, Virginia 23692. There was a graveside service Saturday, April 6, 2012 at 11:30am in Peninsula Memorial Park.Arrangements were handled by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.(Ref: Daily Press on April 3, 2013)
