HERBERT C. THOMAS JR.
Herbert C. "Sonny" Thomas Jr., 72, of Metz, passed away Thursday (Oct. 15, 2009) at the Wishing Well (Tygart Center) in Fairmont following an extended illness.
He was born March 27, 1937, in Claysville, Pa., a son of the late Herbert C. Thomas Sr. and Mae Rowand Thomas.
Sonny was the owner and operator of Thomas Solid Waste Collection until his retirement. He attended the First Century Church of Metz, and was a graduate of Mannington High School, Class of 1956. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
He was a charter member of the Metz Lions Club for 35 years, served as the past president and sat on the board of directors of the Metz Community Association, and was instrumental in the building of the community center.
He was also a past member of the Marion County Rescue Squad. He was a member of the Mannington Lodge No. 31, AF&AM;, Augusta Chapter No. 6, Order of the Eastern Star, Orient Chapter No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Osiris Shriners Oriental Band.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce F. Link Thomas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Bob Shenal of Metz, and LuRita and Ron Jenkins of Farmington; a grandson, Eli Thomas Shenal of Metz; two sisters, Christine Lemley, and Doris Villers and husband Tom, all of Metz; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Francis and Louise Link; sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Frank Clark, Margaret and Bob Morris and Earl Lemley.
Family would like to thank the caregivers at Wishing Well for their care and compassion during Sonny's illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Metz Community Center, 8044 Husky Highway, Metz, WV 26585.
Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E. Main St., Mannington, today from 2-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Century Church at Metz with Pastor Bill Coon officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Bee Gum Cemetery.
