George F Gilmour was born in Yuba County, California; his parents had moved there shortly after their marriage in 1849. His mother died when he was only about 8 months old; his father returned him to Illinois to be raised, but not by his relatives. He was raised near Biggsville at the Joseph Mathes (Matthews?) family. His father subsequently served in the Civil War and murdered ("died by violence", per military records while he was serving with the military but was not killed in action).

George married local girl Amanda Garrett on 10 Jul 1875 in Henderson County, Illinois. They had three sons:
Joseph Coleman (1 Oct 1876-2 Sep 1932)
Arthur (29 Nov 1878-27 Jan 1929) and
William Ervin (b. 17 May 1881).

George and Amanda farmed in Henderson County near Biggsville most of their lives; they did, however, go to Harvey County, Kansas for a few years (where their youngest son was born).
