Revolutionary War Chaplain, Religious Leader. Born in Hopewell, New Jersey, this ordained Baptist minister preached for churches in New Jersey, North Carolina, Philadelphia and New York City before the establishment of the United States. A fervent Patriot, when the Revolutionary War began, he quickly joined the army as a chaplain. While serving in the war he gained the respect of the soldiers and garnered widespread fame because of his courageous support of his fellow patriots. The pastor was often found risking his life to comfort and encourage soldiers in the midst of battle. He was specifically honored for his bravery during the Battle of Chatterton Hill where he went to the front line of the battle to provide assistance and comfort. Claims have been made that he baptized George Washington during the war and that the General chose Ganos to officially declare the end of the war with a prayer. After the conflict he returned to New York City to pastor the First Baptist Church rebuilding it to the large numbers it had enjoyed before the fight for independence. In 1788 he moved to Kentucky where he spent the remainder of his life serving as an effective missionary in spreading the Christian religion throughout this wilderness territory. (bio by: Bigwoo)
