Nora M. Finn, Honora M. Finn.
Daniel Finn (1818-1887) and Catherine Creedon (1834-1914) of Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland.
Nora was born in July 3, 1865 in Cardiff, Wales in the United Kingdom. Her parents had moved from Ireland to Wales, most likely in search of work and Nora and her siblings were born in Wales. She was baptized on July 31, 1865 at St. Mary in Cardiff.
Nora had two sisters: Mary Ann Finn (1859-1885); and Catherine Elizabeth Finn (1864-1918). Both sisters remained unmarried. Her sister, Catherine, worked as a executive secretary at the American Lead Pencil Company in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Nora with her parents, Daniel Finn and Catherine Creedon moved from Ireland to Wales around 1860. They appeared in the 1871 Wales census. They emigrated to the United States in 1873.
Nora married John Joseph Burke I (1868-1939) on October 8, 1889 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Mary Margaret Burke (1891-1949) who married Thomas Patrick Norton I (1891-1968).
Nora died of pneumonia on June 24, 1898 at 16 Elliot Place in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Nora is buried with her parents, siblings, her child and two grandchildren in Holy Name Cemetery on West End Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Daughter raised by sister:
After her death, her child was raised by her sister, Catherine.
Get her marriage certificate from the archive in Trenton, New Jersey. Search for her funeral notice in the Jersey Journal. Find her in the 1895 New Jersey census as "Nora Burke" or "Honora Burke".
An unlabeled and undated photograph of Nora was found in the collection of Josephine Veronica Burke (1907-1995). Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920-2011) identified Mary Ellen Burke in the photograph which led to the tentative identification of the others in the photograph including Nora.
Nora M. Finn (1865-1898) was the great-grandmother of Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ).
Memories of Nora M. Finn (1866-1898):
When Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920-?) mentioned to his grandmother, Sarah Jane Carr (1863-1950), that his other grandmother was born in Wales, she slapped him across the face and said: "You are 100% Irish". She was correct, Nora M. Finn (1866-1898) Burke was born in Wales as the family was looking for work in Wales, but the Finns were from Millstreet in Ireland.
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on June 21, 2003. Updated on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, 2011 by correcting her place of birth as Wales. Her parents were from Millstreet, Ireland. I also added the anecdote from Thomas Norton on getting slapped. Updated on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2013 with the 1871 census of Wales. Updated on March 10, 2013 with her birth in 1865 from the England and Wales birth index. Updated on April 5, 2013 with the full date of her birth and baptism from her certificate sent from the General Register Office.
