Civil War Union Army Officer. Captain, 17th United States Regular Infantry.

George W., 1899-1866. He joined the First Defenders the day after he reached Washington, in April 1861, was soon after appointed a Lieutenant in the Seventeenth United States Infantry,under General Sumner;was with McClellan during the Peninsular campaign against Richmond, participated in the second battle of Bull Run, the battle of Antietam and Fredericksburg, and 1863 was stationed with the 17th Infantry at Little Round Top on the extreme left of the line of battle at Gettysburg. where in crossing the Devil's Den he was wounded by the
bursting of a shell. After the fight at Gettysburg he was placed on recruiting
service with headquarters at Hart Is-land in N. Y. Harbor, where he died of erysipelas in January 1866.
