Robert "Bob" Shaw

Professional Football Player, Coach, Professional Basketball Player. For four seasons (1945 to 1946, 1940 to 1950), he played at the left and right-offensive positions with the Cleveland/Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Cardinals. He attended Ross High School (Ohio) and played collegiate football at Ohio State University. While with the Buckeyes, Shaw earned first-team All-American recognition and was a member of their 1942 squad which clinched the National Championship. He was selected by the Rams during the 10th round of the 1944 NFL Draft, but served with the US Army in the European Theater (he earned a Bronze Star) during World War II, prior to beginning his professional football career. Upon returning home, he joined the Rams and experienced a championship season in his rookie year, as Cleveland (Rams) captured the 1945 NFL Title. During the football off-season, Shaw played for parts of two years (1945 to 1947) in the National Basketball League with the Cleveland Allmen Transfers, Youngstown Bears and Toledo Jeeps. Following the franchise's relocation to Los Angeles, he was a member of their team which appeared in the 1949 NFL Title Game and recorded 2 receptions for 21 yards during that contest. Shaw's most productive year was in 1950 with the Cardinals, as he recorded 48 receptions for 971 yards and led the league with 12 touchdowns, earning him Pro-Bowl honors that season. Shaw concluded his playing career in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts. After retiring as a player, he embarked on a lengthy coaching career as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills. He served as head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL and was named Coach of the Year in 1976. He was inducted into the Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996. (bio by: C.S.)
