Fort Washakie, Wyo. - Funeral for JOHN TISSOYO OBERLY SR., 62, Fort Washakie, Wyo., will be at Brown Church, three miles south of Walters on Highway 5.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Mr. Oberly Sr. died Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at his home.
Burial will be at Deyo Cemetery, Lawton, under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home.
He was born Sept. 27, 1944, in Walters, to Eva Winnerchy Oberly and Acey Oberly Sr. He grew up in Walters, and was a 1962 graduate of Walters High School. He attended Bacone College, Muskogee, Cameron University and the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond. He met his wife, Bernadette St. Clair, while attending college at Bacone. He is a member of the Comanche and Osage nations.
He served in the Army from 1966 to 1969 during the Vietnam War. He was stationed with the Army 1st Battalion 44th Artillery at Camp J.J. Carroll. He was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Specialist E5. He was a charter member and served as quartermaster of Fort Washakie VFW Post No. 10375, the first all-Indian VFW post in Wyoming.
He began his federal career in 1970 with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Oklahoma City. He later transferred to Fort Washakie and to Fort Hall, Idaho. In 1977, he began working for the Indian Health Service. He retired in 1995 with 31 years of federal service.
Survivors include his wife; four children and their spouses, Johnna Oberly, Michelle and Anthony Trujillo, John Jr. and Stacey, and Brandon and Taja; five grandchildren, Tissoyo Oberly, Akasia Oberly, Micaela Trujillo, Namichen Oberly and Eric John Trujillo; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Acey Oberly Jr. and Thelma, Wapato, Wash., Frank Oberly Sr., and Gary and Jackie, all of Norman, and Martin and Linda Oberly, Yukon; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Yvonne Wahahrockah, Jackie and Pete Seymour, Walters, Margaret Oberly Kelley and Emmett, Fort Gibson, and Sara Oberly, Portland, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
