Robert was born the 2nd son of Tillie and Sam Urbanski. His death certificate lists Spooner, WI as the place of birth, but that has not been confirmed. For a time I thought it more likely that it was Spooner, MN but his place of birth remains a mystery. Also a mystery is why his mother changed their last name to Ervin after his father Sam Urbanski died. Back in the days before social security it was easier to change names and people did it often. Maybe it was as simple as Ervin being more American than Urbanski, but all the people involved are gone so the mystery remains.
Robert and his brother Leonard went to live on his grandparent Sobtzak's farm in Roseau county MN after his mother died in 1937. In 1940 he married Gerry Armstrong and on 26 Oct 1943 he enlisted in the Army and served in WWII. I'm still trying to get his service records, but I know that he made the Army his career serving also in Korea. There is a family story that flew on Air Force One in some capacity.
He and Gerry had no children and he died on 28 Dec 1996 and was interred at Fort Snelling on 02 Jan 1996.
Since beginning this family history journey I've learned that this side of my family that I knew nothing about has a long line of men and women who served our country in the armed forces and I am so thankful for each one.
