After platting the town of Marshall, Col. Wm Beatty Archer (John's brother-in-law) secured a valuable beginning of the new community, in the settlement of John Bartlett and James Whitlock. John was a native of New York and came to Walnut Prairie in 1817, but tired of country life and went to Chicago. Col. Archer convinced him to come back to Marshall in 1836.
