Buck Jones
Original name: Charles Frederick Gebhart
Birth: Dec. 12, 1890
Knox County
Indiana, USA
Death: Nov. 30, 1942
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA

Actor. A popular star of Western motion pictures in the 1920s and 1930s, he was featured in the "Rough Riders" series, and developed a popular following of "Buck Jones Rangers." While on a promotional and War Bonds tour in Boston, Massachusetts during World War II, he stopped at the Coconut Grove Night Club on the evening of November 28, 1942 and became one of 492 victims of its infamous fire. Factors contributing to the large number of lives lost were overcrowding, an extraordinarily rapid spread of hot and toxic gases, panic and confusion, locked exit doors and public unfamiliarity with the location of available exits. This event contributed greatly both to the development of fire codes and advances in burn treatments. Legend has it that Jones initially escaped, but during several reentries into the club to help rescue others, suffered thermal injuries to his respiratory tract that cost him his life.

Cremated, Ashes scattered.
