After a long illness Mrs. S. D. Hoffman died April 4, 1910. The Monday before she was brought home from Chicago where she had been for nine weeks receiving medical treatment. With the pleasure of being at home once more she rallied a little, but only for a short time. She gradually grew weaker until the end came quietly and peacefully at 10:15 Monday evening.
Mary V. Ritter was born October 10, 1851 at McEwensville, Pa., and resided in that state until she came to Constantine in 1869. She was married Nov. 21, 1874 to Samuel D. Hoffman at Muncy, Pa. After their marriage they lived in Vicksburg, Pa., leaving there for Constantine in 1877.
Mrs. Hoffman was the mother of three children. Carl Henry, the youngest, died at the age of 1 year, 5 months, and 9 days. Clare E. Hoffman of Allegan, and Elizabeth I., wife of Earle R. Clemens of Rhyolite, Nevada, assisted their father in doing all that could be done to alleviate her suffering. For the last year Mrs. Clemens has been with her mother constantly, giving her devoted attention. With her generous heart Mrs. Hoffman took a little child to raise and William J. McGrath will miss the mother love she gave him from baby to manhood. She had two grandchildren, sons of Mr. And Mrs. C. E. Hoffman of Allegan.
Mrs. Hoffman was one of the youngest in a family of twelve children and the fourth one to die. Her mother lived to be ninety-five years old. During her long sickness she was brave and uncomplaining. Her cheerfulness and patience taught many the lesson of resignation. Mrs. Hoffman was a charitable woman. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran church of Constantine and one of the most active workers in church and Sunday school. But her good deeds were not confined to that church or it's members, but extended out wherever help was needed. Her belief was in doing good and it can be said in her home, in the church, and in the community, "She hath done what she could."
The funeral was held from the home on Thursday afternoon. Her pastor, Rev. R. E. Tullous, was assisted by her former pastor and friend, Rev. D. R. Huber, of Sioux City, Iowa. A sister and brother, Mrs. Anna R. London of Altoona, Iowa, and James M. Ritter of Lawton, Mich., came to attend the final service. Interment was in the Constantine cemetery.
