Dr. Gilbert Callaway was born Jan. 25, 1926, doctors told his mother it was unlikely the child would survive his first year, due to a serious cardiac defect. Dr. Callaway's heart finally stopped beating - 78 years later - on March 6, 2004.
The miraculous life he wasn't "supposed" to have included great joy and Christian service. He was introduced to Christ at age 13 by his best friend, Glenn Malone. By age 19, he was the pastor of his first church. Since that time, Dr. Callaway has been pastor of several Texas churches, including First Baptist Church of Wylie and First Baptist Church of Lewisville.
He earned his doctorate of theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1963. In 1979, he became Director of Missions for Collin Baptist Association, a position he held until retirement in 1993. Since that time, he has served in many ways, including Sunday School teacher, Bible class instructor of Collin County Jail, and Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. Gov. Rick Perry and the State of Texas awarded Dr. Callaway the 2001 Paul and Silas Award for his volunteer efforts at the jail.
In 2003, Collin Baptist Association honored his sixty years of Christian service and the example he has set in his ministry and family life by establishing the annual Gilbert Callaway Love Offering, which will benefit new and existing Baptist ministries.
Dr. Callaway set the highest standard through his own life as a thoughtful, educated, and loving Christian man. To family and friends, colleagues, other community leaders, and strangers, Dr. Callaway has been and will continue to be an inspiration.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Nora Brooks Callaway; daughters Connie Atkins, Carla Falkner, and Kelly Callaway; sons-in-law Donald Atkins, Pat Falkner, and Matt Malcolm; four grandchildren Andy Atkins and his wife, Jennifer, Mark Atkins, Rebekah Falkner, and Anna Falkner; one great-grandchild; brother Melvin Callaway and wife, Geraldine; sisters Dorothy Boen and Vera Bell Anderson and a host of people he served as a Christian leader.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2003 at First Baptist Church of McKinney. Visitation with the family will b held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gilbert Callaway Collin Baptist Association Mission Offering c/o Collin Baptist Association, 970 South Highway 5, McKinney, Texas 75069.
