James is a son of Charles(born April 13, 1854, to parents Richard and Elizabeth Smith Jones) and Winnie Vandergrift Jones, This information comes from his death certificate which has him incorrectly as James M. Jones. His death was attributed to a bacterial infection from inhaling dust, at age 63.

Charles R Jones married "Dicey N Vandergriff" June 19, 1879, Dade County, MO at the home of Gilbert "Vandergriff," the bride's father. Dicey Winnie Vandergrift is a daughter of Gilbert and Mary A Hunt Vandergrift married October 3, 1857, Blount County, TN.

The 1880 Rock Prairie, Dade County, MO Census lists Charles Jones, 26, Winnie, 21, and their son James L, 2 months, born April, 1880, living with Winnie's parents Gilbert and Mary Vandergrift, both 51, born in TN. Charles and Winnie were born in MO.

In 1900 James L Jones, 20 is living with his Vandergrift grandparents, both age 70, and his uncle Isaac L, 50. My guess is that both of his parents died before 1900.

From the Greenfield Vedette, November 11, 1943 -- James Liburn Jones, son of Charley and Winnie Jones, was born near Everton in Dade County, April 1, 1880, and departed this life October 17, 1943, at his home in Everton, being at the time of his death 63 years, 6 months and 27 days of age.
He united in marriage to Mae Mallory December 21, 1902. To this union two children were born Mrs. Floyd Linderman and Mrs. R.W. Patterson, of Everton, MO. Those surviving are his wife, two daughters, two granddaughters, Mrs. Dean Berry and Mrs. Marva Lee Patterson, both of Everton, two half brothers, Orville Jones of Hoisington, Kansas and Linville Jones of Everton. One sister Mrs. Mary Lou Ann Mallory preceded him in death several years ago.
He was converted at an early age and united with the Liberty Baptist church. "Jimmy," as he was better known by his many friends and neighbors, was a true and devoted Christian, a loving husband and father. He will be sadly missed in his home and community.
"You have gone away and left us, and your face no more we'll see, but we know you are waiting yonder, when from cares of life we're free. So, we'll meet you up in heaven, and will clasp your loving hand, there where Jesus is our savior, then all things we'll understand."
