Van Buren Smith was the child of John J. Smith and Nancy Ann Burns ans was born on September 21, 1834 in Warren County, Missouri. This family originated in Virginia.
Van Buren Smith enlisted on October 6, 1862, in CSA Company D, Baylor's Regiment (2nd Arizona Brigade) Texas Calvary of the Confederate Army as a private and was a private at the end of the war. He served until the end of the war. He received Texas Confederate Pension 49236 for his service.
He married Nancy Jane Shockley on November 28, 1861, in Bastrop County, Texas. They were the parents of 11 children, 8 of which lived to maturity and had families of their own.
Van Buren died at the age of 103 and was a well respected citizen of Karnes County, Texas. The current burial location of his wife is unknown.
