Enlisted Co I 13th Tennessee Cavalry 1/15/1864 aged 20 at Taylorsville (now Mountain City). He was supposed to have mustered in at New Market, TN, but he ended up in hospital Knoxville, Tn, with typhoid. He was discharged June 19, 1865. During his illness, Thomas contracted a sore on his leg that left one leg about six inches shorter than the other,leaving him crippled. Because he had initially been supposed to serve, he did collect a pension.

"Co. I, 13th TN Cav., Enlisted on January 15, 1864, age 20. Discharged on June 19, 1865. Resident of Wheeler, Ashe Co., NC in 1901. Mentioned on the 1890 Ashe County Union Veterans Census, resident of North Fork Township."
