Magdalena Mendiola Mesa, born October 30, 1926, peacefully joined her husband of fifty years, as they have now been reunited as a result of her passing, Friday, May 13, 2011. Maggie was born in Guam, to Juan and Eliza Mendiola who all together had seven children, three daughters and four sons. Maggie married Jose P. Mesa on August 18, 1946, and came to the "mainland" via US Navy in 1951 with their children Joseph and Catherine. The majority of their 50 year marriage was spent in Long Beach where they were known for their frequent family gatherings at the "Wise Ave" house on the west side, with BBQ spare ribs and homemade Guamanian dishes. Maggie was the strongest woman in our family, surviving concentration camps in World War II, raising two children while her husband was at sea, and living on for 15 years without her mate. She will be honored and remembered for years to come, as our family dinners and gatherings will forever embrace stories from our past as the "Mesa" family. The laughter these stories bring is irreplaceable. Her strength will live on in all of us. "Gramma Maggie", "Mom", "Auntie Mag", "Meg", "Rafiki", "Maggie" is survived by two children, Joe and Catherine Mesa (Lemon); six grandchildren, Jenifer Lemon, Daniel Mesa, Sarah Mesa-Haas, Matthew Mesa, Stefanie Mesa, and Samantha Mesa; five great-grandchildren, Joseph and Brianna Cazares, Allie and Grace Mesa, and Gabriel Sison. A celebration of her life will be held privately with immediate family members.
