Bess and her sister Nell married Dixon brothers. They met when the brothers, Tom and John, came down to the Franklin County area in southern Illinois to work in the mining industry. Bess married Tom in 1907 and they moved north to Tom's home area of Livingston County, Illinois. A postcard still survives from her little brother Hershel expressing that he thought the family "should have heard from them already" when Bess and Tom moved away.
Bess and Tom's son Thomas "Loren" was their only child to live to adulthood. After sister Nell's death in 1917, Bess and Tom also raised her daughter Catherine as their own.
Bess worked as a school teacher, a nannie, and taught piano lessons for many years. After Tom's death son Loren and family moved into her home. She treasured the close relationships she had with her four grandsons. She outlived her husband 40 years, passing away at age 103.
