Retired US Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sergeant William Clinton Castevens of North Wilkesboro died Monday, July 17, 2006 at Villages of Wilkes Skilled Care.

A graveside service with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be held at Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery

Mr. Castevens was born in Forsyth County, August 24, 1923, to Dewey Clinton (Red) and Beulah Holbrook Castevens. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps, June 14, 1941, with his lifetime best friend, Dwight Blackburn of Traphill. He was on active duty at the Marine Corps Air Station, Quantico, VA on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He and his squadron were immediately moved to San Diego, CA for the defense of California. He served in the US Marine Corps for over 30 years and was a veteran of three wars, World War II, the Korean, and Vietnam War. During World War II, he served with the First Marine Aircraft Wing and the Fourth Marine Division. Other assignments during his Marine Corps career included duty in Japan, Okinawa, and two tours of duty in Vietnam. Duty in the United States included Quantico, Va, Memphis, TN, Cherry Point, NC, El Toro, CA and at the Fleet Marine Force Pacific Headquarters, Camp Smith in Honolulu Hawaii.

In 1966, he was selected for promotion to Warrant Officer in the Avionics Occupational Field. He was a 1940 graduate of Traphill High School and attended Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC. During his Marine Corps career, he attended the University of Tennessee at Memphis, TN and Chapman College at Orange, CA. Military Schools included Schools in aircraft flight simulators and aviation electronics. His personal military decorations and awards include the Presidential Unit Citation with one star, The US Marine Corps Good Conduct Medical with eight stars, the American Defense Service Medal, The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal with Gold Palm, the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unite Citation Medal with Palm and Frame and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Clasp. He retired from the US Marine Corps on June 30, 1973 at the US Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC. After retiring, he became an avid golfer and genealogist. He compiled and published three books on the history of Castevens, Holbrook, and Triplett Families. At death he was compiling information on the Waddell Family History.

He was a member of Round Hill Baptist Church, The Traphill Masonic Lodge #483 for over 50 years, the Disabled American Veterans, the Retired Enlisted Association, the Wilkes County Genealogical Society, The NC Senior Citizens Association, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Marine Corps Base, Parris Island, SC Golf Club.

Mr. Castevens is survived by his wife, Rose Lee Triplett Castevens of North Wilkesboro; one son, Michael Clinton Castevens of Costa Mesa, CA; three grandchildren, Tamara Castevens, Michael Hardin Castevens, and Clinton Ray Castevens all of Costa Mesa, CA; five great grandchildren, Brenna Castevens Smith, Curtis Hardin Castevens, Ryder Douglas Castevens, Andrew Clinton Castevens and Catriona Rose Castevens and a very special grandniece, Christian Holbrook of Traphill.
