Jesse Hilton Stuart
Birth: Aug. 8, 1906
Greenup
Greenup County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Feb. 17, 1984
Greenup
Greenup County
Kentucky, USA

Novelist, short-story writer, poet, and teacher. He was the son of a man who could barely write his name. Though Stuart became recognized as a result of "Man with a Bull-Tongue Plow," he is better known for his fiction writings, a collection which consists of more than 55 books and 500 short stories. In 1941, Stuart's "Men of Mountains" won an Academy of Arts and Sciences Award. Stuart's 1943 novel, "Taps for Private Tussie," won the Thomas Jefferson Award. Stuart made Greenup County, Kentucky, the setting of his works and masterfully addressed universal themes through the small Appalachia setting. Stuart did not always find it easy living and writing in his hometown, for while he accurately portrayed his region he was equally as blunt and did not hide the embarrassing tendencies of the people who lived there. For this his fellow Greenup County citizens often criticized him. But Stuart persisted, and he lived on in Greenup County until his death following a series of strokes in 1984. (bio by: Imagine)

Jesse, you are my 3rd cousin 2x removed which sounds pretty distant but you remind me of my dad who was also an extremely talented writer from Flatwoods,Greenup Cty., KY. I'm giving you some Kentucky black-eyed Susans in honor of both your memories.
