31 August 1861, TA Hopkins enlisted as private in Co. G 14th (McCarver's) AR Infantry at Pocahontas, AR. Carpenter in Cabell's Brigade at Priceville, MS July 1862. Injured in service and sent to General Hospital 10 August 1862. 22 August 1862 in hospital at Columbus, MS. Appointed 1st Sgt 1 Jan 1863.
Married Martha M. Hinson 17 Jan 1864. Infant girl born February 1865. Martha M Hinson Hopkins dies as a result of childbirth complications.
Married Civil war widow Martha Parsley Shannon Hopkins shortly thereafter on 6 April 1865 in Scott Township, Lawrence County, AR.
Infant daughter of Thomas and second wife Martha M. Hinson Hopkins, died 18 December 1865.
Thomas and Martha Parsley Shannon Hopkins gave birth to their first known child, Martha Angeline Hopkins 14 March 1867, following by Thomas Holmes Hopkins on 22 January 1869.

Sometime around 1880, Thomas returns to Arkansas and pays a visit to Martha. He is introduced to Rachel at that time, and Rachel to him as being her father. Thomas indicated during his life that he was unaware that Martha was pregnant when he left.

Thomas worked as a farmer, carpenter, and shoemaker. The Hopkins Family Bible mentions three of his four marriages, omitting reference to his marriage to Martha Parsley Shannon. His obituary mentions all four. No record has been found of his divorce from Martha.
He died 26 May 1899 in Doniphan of malarial fever and dyspepsia.
