Bucky was the son of Josephine Kephart and Barry James Kephart Sr. They claimed he had disappeared after leaving a note at their apartment in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on August 22, 1981. The note stated that he was going out and would be back soon. When he did not return, he was not reported missing for two days. Some thirteen years later, Bucky's sister, Beverly, came forward and reported her story to the police. She stated that due to his dyslexia, Bucky could not have written a note as his parents said he did. She remembers hearing Bucky crying as he was being severely beaten with a belt by Barry Sr. the night he disappeared. Beverly was told to stay in her bedroom, or she would "get some, too." She stated her parents abused all their children in 1981, and that Barry Sr. was an alcoholic. Authorities believe Bucky died as a result of the beating his sister overheard, and that his body was put in a dumpster near the family's apartment, never to be found.
