MISS KITTIE McPHEE FALLS UNDER HORSE'S FEET AND IS KILLED.

Was Driving Hay Rake When Horse Breaks Pole and Throws Victim Under Horse and Skull is Fractured by a Kick— Body Dragged a Mile in Rake Before Released— Mother is Prostrated With Grief.

The most heart rending tragedy which has ever occurred in the vicinity of Cheyenne happened yesterday afternoon, when Kittie McPhee was killed at the Van Tassell ranch near Islay.

Her brother-in-law, Frank Carroll, had contracted to put up the hay on the ranch, and to help him Miss McPhee had for several days been driving a team hitched to a hay rake. The horses were considered gentle and in giving them to the girl to drive no careless risks were taken.

Yesterday afternoon at 2:40 o'clock, as Miss McPhee was turning the rake rather sharply, one of the horses kicked and broke the pole. This allowed the rake to tilt suddenly forward, throwing the driver under the feet of the horses. Almost as she struck the ground, she was struck a frightful blow on the base of the skull by the iron shod hoof of one of the horses.

The blow was a merciful one, for being without restraint, the maddened horses ran away, the steel teeth of the rake catching the limp, unconscious body of the girl, for nearly a mile the team kept up its furious pace, the pitiful little form being dragged and rolled about in the merciless teeth of the machine.

After running about a mile the rake was tipset and the horrified hay makers who had vainly attempted to stop the runaways hurried to the spot.

A moment's examination showed that the fatal injury had been the first kick, although other dreadful wounds had been inflicted. The still form was carried to the house, where life lingered for about two hours, death coming before consciousness returned.

Dr. Barber was sent for, but did not arrive until life had fled.

Kittle McPhee was 24 years of age, the youngest of four children, two sisters, Mrs. Frank Carroll and Mrs. Faulkner, and one brother, Angus, surviving her. The brother is now in Seattle, but has been telegraphed for.

Her mother, Mrs. Donald McPhee, is also living, her father having died several years ago.

The remains were brought to this city last night and are in charge of Mr. Longhurst, who will conduct the funeral arrangements.

With the body came the family and friends of the dead girl, who will remain until after the funeral.

Mrs., McPhee is in care of a physician, being completely prostrated by the awful fate which has come to her daughter.

Miss McPhee was well known by a great many Cheyenne people. She was a skillfull horsewoman and had ridden in and won several of the ladies races at Frontier day. She had a host of friends throughout the country who will be inexpressibly shocked and grieved to learn of her dreadful and untimely death.
