There is a Cary cenotaph in Ashmont Cemetery.

John was one of the 54 original proprietors of Bridgewater. He was the first town clerk of Bridgewater, and served in that role from 1656 to 1681.

John married Elizabeth Godfrey in June 1644. They had children:

Francis - 1647
Elizabeth - 1649
James - 1652
Mary - 1654
Jonathan - 24 September 1656
David - 1658
Hannah - 1661
Joseph - 1663
Rebecca - 30 March 1665
Sarah - 1667
Mehitable - 1670


John died in Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony.

Born in Somersetshire England
He became in 1651 an Original Proprietor
and Honored Settler in this River.
The Clerk of the Plantation.

When the town of Bridgewater was
Incorporated in 1656He was Elected
Constable, the first and only Officer of
That year.

Town Clerk until his death in 1681.

Tradition says
He was the first Teacher of Latin in
Plymouth Colony.

This Tablet is Erected by his Descendants
