Robert was the son of Brice Marshall and his first wife Elizabeth Martin.
Robert James Marshall served in the artillery, Roagues (could be slightly different spelling) Battalion, Albemarle Artillery during the Civil War according to his wife's pension application filed in Albemarle Co., VA June 16, 1924. The Captain he worked under was named W. H. Southall. Site of his death is listed as "near Gilbert Station". He was attended by Dr. W. C. Shackleford of Stony Point, VA.
Name sometimes shown as James Robert Marshall and Robert James Marshall. The book titled The Descendents of William Marshall (1650-1686) & Elizabeth Cox (1650-1717) lists his name as James Robert Lee Marshall (see p. 37).
From Sherwood and Nicholas' book about the Albemarle Artillery: "Marshall, Robert J. Pvt. Farmhand, age 15, son of Bryce, age 54, and Ruth Marshall, age 45, Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co., 1860 Census. Enlisted 2/13/62 Charlottesville, present on every muster thereafter. Patient in hospital 4/9/65."
Most likely Robert could not write. Several of his Civil War documents are noted "Signed with his X".
Robert died of tuberculosis.
