Residence Hanover County VA.; 5'8", light complexion; carpenter.
Enlisted on 6/28/1861 at Camp Adams, VA as a Private, he mustered into "E" Co. VA 15th Infantry.
On rolls 12/15/1864.
Paroled 4/28/1865 Richmond, VA.

Son of James Truell (?-bef 1850) and Adeline Swift (~1814-aft 1850) of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
He was the brother of Elizabeth C. Truell (1839-1918) who married Haws Payne (?-?). She is resting in the Fredericksburg Cemetery.
He was also the brother of Anne M. Truell (~1844-bef 1875) who married William Hardin Davis, Sr., C. S. A. (1838-1919) of Hanover County, Virginia as his first wife.
He was the grandson of James Truell, possible War of 1812 Vet (~1790-aft 1850), of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
In 1850, he is with his mother Adeline and sisters, Elizabeth and Ann in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. In 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900, he is not yet found in the census. In 1910, he is listed as an uncle the home of A. Judson Edenton in Berkeley, Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He was a house carpenter. The Margaret L. Hall who is listed as A. Judson Edenton's mother-in-law was the informant on Private William's certificate of death. [Family info courtesy of David A. French (47127919).]

He was admitted to the R.E. Lee Camp Home in Richmond, VA, on April 6, 1906, at the age 63 for general debility; discharged at his own request May 7, 1906. Applied for re-admission October 25, 1910. Applied again Oct. 23, 1912: "I am 72 years of age, no children to help me out and when a man reach that age and are poor he will find himself without friends...".

The 15th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, with men from Richmond and Henrico and Hanover counties.
