Winnifred "Winnie" May Balsiger passed away peacefully on November 8, 2007 at the age of 87, with family at her side in Portland, Oregon.

Winnie was born December 10, 1919 in Mellette, South Dakota, one of four children of Howard Winfred and Edith Margaret Allbee. She graduated from Mellette High School and earned a teaching certificate after two years studying journalism at South Dakota State College. As a young woman, she taught school at Mellette and worked for the De Smet newspaper.

Winnie married her love, Richard "Dick" Balsiger, on May 29, 1946 and lived in Britton and Aberdeen for several years, helping her husband Dick establish his law practice. In 1961, they moved to Portland, Oregon and raised their two sons there. Winnie was a longstanding member of Montavilla United Methodist Church. In 1985, Winnie and Dick retired to Oceanside, Oregon to enjoy the home they built by the ocean.

Mom enjoyed many things, including walks on the beach, stained glass projects, crossword puzzles, reading, and owls. She had a particular passion for ceramic collectibles, and her extensive Christmas and Halloween village displays brought many hours of joy to her and her family. Mom had a quick wit, a keen intelligence, and a love of learning, and she could always be counted on to recall a fact or detail that eluded others. She loved words and language, and we will always remember her as our authoritative source for word roots and meanings.

Like Dad, family was the most important part of her life and she was devoted to her husband and her children. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, three grandsons, and four great-grandchildren in the Portland area. She also leaves behind many loving relatives including sister-in-law Polly Getten of Phoenix, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children in South Dakota, Arizona, California, Kansas, Minnesota, New York, and South Carolina.

Mom created a home filled with love, wonderful meals, and cherished memories that will never be forgotten. Her family will miss her deeply and forever but we are comforted by the fact that she is where she wants to be - together again with Dad – her loving husband of 61 years who preceded her in death just three months ago.

Her funeral will be Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield, SD. Reverend Stephen Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
