Andrew Laird was the son of James Laird and Ann Danskin. His parents were natives of Scotland and he was one of ten children. He was born in Canada, and came with his parents to Bradford, Iowa, in June of 1857.

Andrew was a resident of Bradford, Chickasaw County, Iowa when he enlisted as a Private on 29 Jan 1864 at the age of 18. He mustered in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry on the same day as his enlistment. Andrew had two older brothers who also served with Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry. John Laird and Hugh Laird mustered in Co H Dec 1863.

Andrew was wounded on 11 Jun 1864, at Ripley, Mississippi during the Guntown campaign. He died from his wounds on 13 Jun 1864. Andrew was originally buried at Guntown, but was later re-interred at Corinth National Cemetery, Section C Site 2723.
