George K. Bogan served in the U.S. Navy from 12/9/1943 - 1/24/1946 as a Bosun's mate on the Kermit Roosevelt. Later, he became a salesman for R. W. Pool. After retiring, he became a crossing guard for Valparaiso Community Schools. He was a very hard working and special man.

One of the traditions that has carried over to my little family with Josh and Jim is delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly. Grandpa & Grandma, Scott, (my brother), and I used to deliver meals once a week. I've continued that. When Josh was old enough, I decided it was time for he and I to do that. I have always enjoyed being around older people. I'm comfortable around them and love to hear their stories. Josh likes it, too. Whenever he's on vacation from school, he and the old folks chat about how cute he is, school, the Cubs and the Bears. The men enjoy the sports conversation, and the ladies the cuteness of our son and what a good boy he is. When Jim is on vacation from work, he goes along with me. Since my Dad is now retired, he goes along with me. It's a family tradition, and I intend to keep it going for a long time. After all, we're all going to be that age someday and will need help from others...My grandpa also loved to be outdoors. One of my fondest memories of he and my grandma was going to The Dunes in Chesterton, IN. We used to hike the trails, and then roast hot dogs and marshmallows. It didn't matter what season, spring or winter, we were there. In the winter one year, my grandpa talked me into going down a huge sand dune covered in snow on a HEFTY BAG!!! My brother did the same, but with a different outcome. For some reason he knew how to steer a stupid plastic bag. I was never informed of the special training it took to slide down a hill on a bag. Anyway, I crashed into a small tree which smacked me in the face. Grandpa must have seen what was going to happen and he yelled TURN!! I had no time to turn and the major question was HOW??? I was fine but I was laughed at for years to come, and I still am by my brother. What an experience, but one I will never forget. I miss that man!!

He was born Dec. 8, 1913, in Frankfort, IN, a son of George and Gladys (Bristow) Bogan. He was a member of Porter Lodge 137 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend and Orak Temple of the Shrine, Michigan City. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
His wife, the former Esther Edwards, died in 1983. Surviving are two sons, Bruce of Valparaiso and George A. of Illinois; a daughter, Mary Salzer of Kouts; three brothers, Charles of Missouri, Frank of South Bend and Robert of Hobart; two sisters Sally Affeld of Brownsburg and Peggy Betz of Valparaiso; and seven grandchildren.
Services 1:30pm Thursday at Bartholomew Funeral Home; the Rev. M.W. Robert Craig officiating; cremation; visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with Masonic services at 8 p.m.; memorials to First Christian Church or Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.
