Floyd Knapp was a home builder in Des Moines, Iowa building many of the homes along Douglas, Clinton and the Ashby park area of town. The legal description for the homes in this part of town is Knapp Place.
He was also an inventor of sorts. He invented and patented the ball bearing thrust used in automobile technology but when Ford motors asked to buy, he passed, planning to market it himself. Ford improved on his process and patented their own version. The photo of him at a train station is when he was leaving to go to Washington DC and file his patent.
He invented a cigarette machine that would slice open the pack of cigarettes when dispensed.
Services for Floyd E. Knapp, 62, of 3610 Thirty-eighth st., who died of emphysema Sunday at Tucson, Ariz., will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dunn Funeral Home. burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
A native of Allerton, Mr. Knapp came to Des Moines 40 years ago and was in the contracting and building business 25 years before he retired in 1948. He had spent much of his time the last two years in Arizona because of ill health. He was a member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
The body will arrive Thrusday at Dunn's. Active pallbearers will be Glen Lowe, Russell Baskerville, Robert Butler, Charles Roth, Woodrow Milner and Edward Rodine. Honorary pallbearers will be Ture Engstrom and Don Baskerville.
Surviving are seven daughters, Mrs. Garry Porter, Mrs. Herman Miller, Mrs. Louise Nading, Mrs. Bill Woodyard, Mrs. Wayne Roquet and Mrs. Bernard Carder, all of Des Moines, and Mrs. Murray Roberts of Minneapolis, Minn., and three sons, Howard, Harold and James Knapp, all of Des Moines.
Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. William Seidler of Jamaica, Mrs. Russell Whiteley of Corydon, Mrs. William Williams of Yakima, Wash., and Mrs. Don Cruikshank and Mrs. Luther Landstrom, both of Des Moines; a brother William of Allerton; 34 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
