Thomas N. Cohen came to Carrollton, Alabama from Union County, South Carolina in 1845. As an adult, he owned a dry goods store with Henry B. Latham, called Cohen & Latham Co. He entered the Civil War on the Confederate side in Columbus, MS as a private in the 24th Alabama Infantry, Company C. After the war, he married Ophelia E. Nevitt. He was killed on Feb 24, 1875, along with his wife and a baby daughter, Mary Ophelia Cohen, when their home in northern Pickens County was destroyed by a storm. His son, Benjamin Cohen, about six years old at the time, survived the storm.
